Email Marketing Tutorial for Beginners, How To Write An Effective Email Marketing Campaign in 2022

How To Write An Effective Email Marketing Campaign in 2022

If you're an email marketer or want to be one, you may be wondering if there's a better way to get leads through email marketing than saying something like "HURRY UP AND SIGN UP FOR THIS FREE STUFF!" Yes, we understand how difficult it is to be honest with customers when they expect so much from you, but there are some things you should know to write an effective email marketing campaign. Whether you are a small or large business, continue reading to learn how to increase your email open rate from customers.

But first, What is an email marketing campaign?

Email marketing campaigns are a type of electronic marketing communication in which businesses send promotional, transactional, and partnership messages to their customers, prospects, and partners. When you use an email campaign to promote your business, you will be able to reach far more customers than traditional methods used by many businesses.

Anatomy of a winning email marketing campaign:

  • Subject line

  • Email content / Body

  • CTA (Call to Action)

How to write the perfect subject line and boost your email marketing campaigns?

Why is it necessary to create a perfect subject line? Simply put, one of the most important factors in increasing open rates is the subject line of your emails. The subject line is the first thing you see when you receive a message. You will open the email if the subject line catches your attention.

How to write a perfect subject line?

To do this, you can simply use one of the two major ways used to craft a subject line; the Urgent Subject line and the "A-B-C" rule.

The urgent subject lines;

Used to indicate a sense of urgency or scarcity of a product. Assume you have a special offer that you don't want your audience to pass up. For example, if you have a 24-hour sale and want to send an email to your customers, you can use phrases like "24-hours hours left to register" or "don't miss these great deals" to pique their interest and demonstrate urgency.

The "A-B-C" rule;

"A" stands for "Attention," so make your subject line catch people's attention.

"B" stands for "Benefit," which is what you intend to provide with this email, and "C" stands for "Curiosity," which you must arouse in order to motivate people to open your emails.  Let's use the "A-B-C" rule to format this subject line:

Subject line: Are you an email marketer? 3 insider tips for increasing conversions.

Target audience: email marketers.

Attention (A): "Are you an email marketer?" is a catchy phrase.

Benefit (B): The direct benefit here is to"Increase conversions,"

Curiosity (C): The word "Insider information" will arouse curiosity and increase open rate.

Important Note: Always test the subject line using sites such as sendcheckit or email subject line grader. These tools will help grade your subject line credibility on a 100 point score.

3 Best email subject lines Tips:

  • Include an emoji in your subject lines in order to capture attention, pique people's interest, and encourage them to open your emails.

  • Avoid using spammy words like "hurry up," "free," "here," "get," "exclamation mark (!)," and "ALL CAPS." These are not good practices and are frequently flagged as bad words by spam filters.

  • Dissect and segment your marketing email to a specific audience. In our example, we target email marketers; we can further segment our lists by targeting cold email marketers, bulk mailers, email marketing beginners, and professionals.

Now that we've created a catchy subject line, let's take a look at how to write the perfect email that increases conversions using a real-life example. To demonstrate this, we will use the TCPARS (Target, Call-out, Personal connection, Authority, Reciprocity, and Social Proof) rule, which is a simple rule to remember when writing any email.

Subject line: Are you an email marketer? 3 insider tips for increasing conversions.

"Hey" or "Hi {Name}",

I don't mean to waste your time, but if you aren't an online business owner looking to increase your sales and send high-converting marketing emails to your list, please delete this email.

I almost felt like my online business was failing five years ago, just like you! I had no idea how or where to get leads, how to write an effective email that converts... I understand your anguish. But now, after years of perseverance, research, testing, and hard work, I have over 40,000 students worldwide following my courses, and the number is growing. You can call me stupid, but my next course is only $19.99! I'd give it away for less, but Udemy won't let me sell it for less than this. As a result, I've decided to give you all of the tools and apps that I use for free when you enroll.

Check out the review I have received from previous students. Please let me know if you want that after you enroll in the course.

Let me explain the TCPARS rule using the above sample email:

T (Target): The first thing you must do is set a target audience in this case, email marketers.

C (Call-out): The call-out is the first sentence of the email; if it is boring or fails to capture the recipient's attention, they will abandon the message and not continue reading. As a result, they may not click on any links, lowering click-through rates.

P (Personal connection): This demonstrates an understanding of your target audience's pain points by connecting personally with them and stimulating their emotions to keep reading the email.

A (Authority): You must demonstrate authority by stating how you can assist them and providing something that allows them to trust you.

R (Reciprocity): You must persuade them that you owe them something and that you are willing to give them something for less than it is worth.

S (Social proof): Use image screenshots or links to testimonials to add social proof to your product. This increases your target audience's trust in your product. Finally, don't forget to include a CTA (Call to Action) such as a link or a simple "please reply if interested."

Important Note: Now that you have a great email template, you can use tools like mailwizz and gmass to test how your email will perform before sending it.

5 Tips For Successful Email Marketing Campaigns

Congrats! You've finally drafted that email with an A+ subject line, you've sent it, and you're not sure if it went to spam or if your recipients received it. Here are five factors that will determine whether your emails end up in the spam or in the inbox. If you follow the guidelines outlined here, I guarantee that 90% of your emails will arrive in your inbox.

  1. Avoid using spam triggers in the subject line or email body:  Most email providers are now equipped with Spam filters that use AI technology to examine your email pattern and mark your email as spam if it looks spammy.

Pro tip: Always test your subject line with tools like sendcheckit to see if it's good or needs to be improved.

  1. Check your domain status on a periodic basis to see if your domain is blacklisted. This can be accomplished by using tools such as MXtoolbox to determine whether or not it is blacklisted. If your domain is blacklisted, your emails will most likely be sent to the spam folder. If your domain is blacklisted, contact the company that is blacklisting it and request that it be removed, or simply use another domain to send emails.

Note: Some newly registered domains will be automatically blacklisted for 30 days before being removed from the blacklist.

  1. Minimize using URLs and links inside the content of the email especially when linking to other products. Affiliate links, promotions or CPA links are very likely to be flagged as spam. This can be avoided by:

    1. Create a post or landing page on your website for the affiliate product, then share the link in your email.

    2. Cloaking or masking the URL: URL cloaking is simply the replacement or rerouting of an affiliate link with a regular URL, such as your domain website.

  2. Avoid email tracking: This may cause the emails to be certified as spam, as it inserts some hidden images or links into your emails; when someone opens the email, the image loads the hidden URL and sends a message to the server informing it that the email has been opened. This can be avoided by:

    1. Turning off email tracking, or

    2. If you need to track emails, use a custom domain. You can do this with any SMTP service, such as SendGrid or SparkPost. Email marketing services such as MailChimp and Aweber do not provide this option; instead, they will track things for you.

  3. Reputation: Online reputation is built upon mainly four things

    1. Sending score: Make sure to test your sending score on a regular basis. You can use mailtester to send test emails and check your score; if there are any issues, this service will provide you with a detailed report.

    2. Email warm-up: this is critical if you are using your own SMTP server or SMTP service with a dedicated IP address.

    3. Bounce rate: is the number of emails that bounce back to your server. Always validate your emails to ensure that your email marketing campaigns have a bounce rate of less than 1%.

    4. Complain rate: is the number of people who have reported you as spam. By focusing on the right people, you can ensure a low complaint rate.

Make sure to write the perfect email so that people don't think you're a spammer. It's a good idea to read the final draft from the perspective of the recipient and ask yourself if it appears spammy or not.

Conclusion

You might have the best products or services in the world, but without a properly constructed email marketing campaign and the right subject line you won’t be able to sell them. By using the tips in this article, you can increase your open rates and use email to connect with your prospects.
